The midnight clear

All right, this is not about home – other than to express my gratitude for having one as another midnight passes into Christmas Day. My favourite carol is “It came upon a midnight clear”, unique among carols of its time in that it does not mention the birth of Jesus. Indeed it was written as a protest song against the looming Civil War. Mentions of Syria in the readings from the Gospel according to St Luke make the lines

“And man, at war with man, hears not, the love song which they bring. O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing.” even more poignant than usual.

Happy Christmas.
