I taught myself to stitch by threading a needle and drawing with the thread.  My repertoire of stitches is very small. Unless you are doing stylised, decorative embroidery, you really don't need to learn lots of stitches to start creating beautiful embroidery. Add them later by all means, but this guide is all you need to get started.
