Textile designer and illustrator is well-known for her quilt patterns. The young skaters featured here are taken from one of her latest quilt designs in which skaters and their dogs and other animals whirl, twirl and whizz across the ice, revealing Janine’s sense of fun and understanding of the human body when skating. I begged to adopt this rather sweet couple, focused more on each other than showing off on the ice, and added some of my favourite festive greenery mistletoe, to celebrate a New Year, when there is still plenty of winter fun to be found on ice rinks or frozen ponds. They reminded me of Jo and Laurie in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, and it occurred to me that you could make a very special embroidered cover for a treasured, hardback copy – watch this space for 2023 kits. The French traditionally send New Year greetings with cards featuring mistletoe, but I have left the words Bonne Année as an optional extra, along with the skating dog and duck. In France, cards featuring mistletoe are sent to wish people a Happy New Year.

This is a lovely, fairly simple kit for a beginner and does not take too long, unless you decide to add lots more falling snow! Perfect for winter days ahead.
