The ‘Jule’ Post Bag, make this festive hand-embroidered bag to display each Christmas

What is included in the kit?

  • A unique  and festive hand embroidery kit from Caroline Zoob Designs, collaborating with Janine Pope.
  • A large piece of repurposed linen for the front of the bag, hand printed with the design.
  • A thread card loaded with hand-embroidery threads in subtle shades of white you to complete the hand-embroidered version as shown.
  • A card folder with a letter from Janine and guidance from Caroline on how to embroider the design by hand.
  • A full-colour A3 fold out with comprehensive instructions for making the bag, and for working the design with appiqué and machine embroidery (please note appliqué fabric and machine embroidery threads are not included).
NOT included is fabric for the back of the bag, lining and little ties. This collaboration grew out of an article by textile artist Janine Pope in Issue 8 of The Stitcher's Journal about the tradition of the Danish Jule Post (Christmas Post) Bag, a bag which is hung up each year to carry the Christmas cards. You can read a copy of the article in The Stitcher's Journal Archive HERE.

Additional Information

In the kit you can read all about Janine Pope inspiration for her original charming design, and you will have the pattern to make the same design in two ways: one, with appliqué and machine embroidery, and the other with hand embroidery.  I chose to embroider the design by hand, using the white and off-white threads in the kit. The embroidery can be as simple as outline stitch, or you can treat it like a stitch sampler and try different stitches. It is a very relaxing kit to stitch, and would make the most charming present for anyone with Scandinavian connections. I fill my bag every year with Eucalyptus and a couple of cards as shown.

If you plan to make the appliqué version, you may use the printed panel by turning the side with the design to the inside. Please note, the only materials in the kit are the printed panel for the front of the bag and a thread card.  In the UK, you can buy lovely fabrics from Cowslip Workshops. In the US, you could buy wonderful linens from Blackberry Primitives, who also ship to the UK. I recommend Shortbread.

The finished bag is 28cm x 24 cm.

Update for ALL customers

27 October 2025

I am delighted to announce that we are now able to ship to the US, duty paid and, for the time being, I will absorb the duty.

Issue 26 of The Stitcher’s Journal has now been despatched to all overseas subscribers and you should shortly be receiving emails from Royal Mail confirming this, with a tracking number.

The website has had to be reconfigured so that shipping is no longer included in the prices, but is rather a flat rate, set for whichever country we are sending  to — including the UK — and will be shown at the checkout.  I have of course reduced the kit prices, which used to include shipping, but I have also taken this opportunity to review my prices which have not increased to reflect the considerable increase in costs since February 2022. All in all, I think the results are fair, especially as in carrying out this exercise I realise I have been heavily subsidising the actual postage costs for the past three years.

Unfortunately, we are not currently able to take advantage of the Large Letter Rate for shipping to the US, but on a positive note (!)  all orders are now tracked and the flat rate has a greater weight allowance.

I will be adding some new kits, bundles and vintage finds and fabrics to the site today, Monday 27th October and through the week, and I really hope things will run smoothly now.

Thank you so much for your support and patience, it means more than I can say.

With very best wishes,

Caroline
