Quiet afternoon in my workroom slowly gathering for my stand at the @decorativelivingfair. As well as working with needle and thread, I love to make paper collages and also enjoy matching old sketches and watercolours to frames. I will find these 1910 pen and ink sketches hard to part with. I try not to use modern mounts but find instead pieces of antique paper complete with marks and stains. And so these pictures go on through time - an unknown hand sketched them on a day spent sailing in 1910 - you can almost smell and hear the sea, handling them. They probably lay in a portfolio until descendants sold them to the person I bought them from, over a century later. I think it is time for them to be seen now. And so it is time to toddle over to the fabulous @alteredimagespictureframing which just happens to be in my village High Street. They always just ‘get’ what I am trying to achieve, even when I turn up with fragments and scraps. . #decorativelivingfair #penandink #framing #movingthingson

I don’t think I am alone in finding pieces of patchwork like this utterly inspiring and irresistible. All memories of severe lectures to self about stash paring are forgotten. I am often asked where I find the contents of my many flights of drawers at the workroom, and the answer is at fairs like the @decorativelivingfair which @hetty_purbrick and I have organised since 2005. We both love vintage and antique textiles and wanted them to feature in our fair. Several dealers sell tempting bundles and packs of fabrics and haberdashery, making it a great opportunity for makers to stock up on inspiring raw materials. Starting tomorrow, we will be featuring some of the exhibitors who specialise in textiles over at the @decorativelivingfair. New embroidery kit, On a bicycle made for two, a collaboration with illustrator @pope.janine. Those who know me now may find it hard to believe but in my salad days I was a cyclist. I negotiated Boston Manor to the Royal College of Music via Hammersmith Broadway (no lights then, you just kept moving) on a daily basis. There is simply nothing nicer than messing about on a bike. As the press officer for the Dutch Tourist Office in London (btw best job ever) I took groups on cycling press trips - very flat, Holland, and our luggage was sent on. So I enjoyed ‘colouring in’ this lovely design by @pope.janine so much, remembering the delight of cycling through the countryside, the particular freedom of cycling. I could not have wished for a nicer group of women

I could not have wished for a nicer group of women than those who come to sewing group on Tuesdays. One became a grandmother for the first time just before Christmas and it was fun to watch first a quilt being made and then on a bit of a whim, I remembered a rabbit in my 2004 book Childhood Treasures - not my design but a lovely, tactile shape. Pattern made, vintage blanket FINALLY being used and Lily has an Easter Bunny who has, appropriately, a lot of bunny relatives in the making! The first issue of the 2023 subscription to @thest

The first issue of the 2023 subscription to @thestitchersjournal is on its way! It is full of articles ‘celebrating the art of embroidery’ (I gave the Journal a tag line as we move into the 5th year with a total of seventeen issues tucked away in @thebritishlibrary_ - a legal requirement which gives me a little thrill each time I stick the address label on the envelope). I hope readers will feel it lives up to it! If you have not yet subscribed, now is a good time as I print extra copies. Each issue is 64 pages with no advertising other than the occasional leaflet. Each issue contains a fold-out insert in which I share some of the things which inspire me - there are patterns and threads but not step-by- step - just ideas, colour palettes, inspiring paintings, and original drawings which you can trace and use. Australian textile artist Judy Wilford spent most

Australian textile artist Judy Wilford spent most of her life in the Australian countryside, growing up on the south coast before moving to New South Wales, where her home was perched on a ravine with spectacular views. When she was nursing in the remote and parched Kimberley region, an old bushman shared his delight in small birds with Judy, showing her the different ways to observe them in their natural habitat. Thus became a lifelong passion and we are so lucky that Judy was able to finish this book, dedicated to ‘all the birds that sing’ before she died earlier this year. It is a masterclass in how to de-mystify the process of creating an embroidery from scratch and one from which I have learned some invaluable tips and tricks.
